Warming Ponds Mean It's Time to Start Beneficial Bacteria
After a long cold winter, spring brings the moment pond owners have been waiting for: the water warms up. Once pond temperatures climb above about 50°F — as they do across Virginia in early spring — beneficial bacteria become more and more effective as the season moves toward summer.
What beneficial bacteria do
- Convert ammonia, then nitrite, then nitrate, and finally convert nitrate to nitrogen gas, removing nitrogen from the pond
- Digest organic muck, leaf litter and dead algae on the bottom
- Improve water clarity and reduce odor
- Remove a major source of the nutrients that feed algae, without dredging or chemicals
A three-part program
Our beneficial bacteria program combines three products, each with its own job:
- Microbe-Lift PBL introduces the bacteria that restart nitrification and denitrification in the water column.
- Microbe-Lift Sludge Away digests the muck that was left behind over the winter, reducing the source of nutrients.
- MetaMateria Bio-Lair floating media gives the bacteria a permanent home with a great deal of surface area.
What a spring start-up looks like
For a one-acre HOA pond, our example plan begins with weekly applications of PBL for the first four weeks, Sludge Away applied directly over visible muck zones, and one or two Bio-Lair floating units placed near fountains or aerators. From week five, PBL moves to every two weeks and Sludge Away to monthly along the shallow edges. The full schedule is on our nitrogen and organic muck reduction page.
